My Baby and I Scan

PREPARING FOR A SCAN: TIPS FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS

Expecting a new addition to the family is an exciting time, and ultrasound scans are an essential part of prenatal care. These scans provide valuable information about the baby’s development, growth, and health. To ensure a productive and positive experience during the ultrasound appointment, expectant mothers can take several steps to prepare both physically and emotionally.

PHYSICAL PREPARATION:

  • TIMING: Schedule the ultrasound appointment between 18 and 24 weeks for the best results. At this stage, the baby’s organs are well-developed, making it easier to capture clear images.
  • FOOD AND HYDRATION: Have a light meal before the appointment to prevent an empty stomach from causing discomfort during the scan. However, avoid eating greasy or spicy foods that may interfere with image quality. Drink plenty of water beforehand to ensure adequate hydration, as a full bladder helps improve visualization of the baby’s organs.
  • COMFORTABLE CLOTHING: Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to the lower abdomen for quick positioning during the scan. Some facilities may provide gowns or robes for patients during the procedure.
  • BRING ESSENTIALS: Carry a list of important information such as your medical history, previous ultrasounds or imaging studies (if applicable), and insurance details to ensure smooth communication between you and your healthcare provider.
  • SUPPORT SYSTEM: Invite a partner, friend, or family member to accompany you during the appointment for emotional support and to help remember important details discussed with your healthcare provider.

EMOTIONAL PREPARATION:

  • UNDERSTANDING WHAT TO EXPECT: Familiarize yourself with the ultrasound process by researching common procedures, potential risks, and benefits online from reputable sources like Mayo Clinic or American Pregnancy Association websites or books from authoritative publishers like American Pregnancy Association or Mayo Clinic Press. This knowledge will help alleviate any anxiety surrounding the procedure itself.
  • SETTING REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Understand that each ultrasound may not reveal every detail about your baby’s development but can provide valuable insights into their overall health and growth progression at that point in time. Be open-minded about what you might learn during this appointment while maintaining realistic expectations regarding what information can be obtained through an ultrasound scan alone (e.g., gender determination is not always possible).
  • ASKING QUESTIONS: Prepare a list of questions for your healthcare provider ahead of time so that you can make the most out of your appointment by addressing any concerns or curiosities you may have about your pregnancy journey thus far or what lies ahead in terms of future appointments and tests (e.g., glucose screening). Remember that no question is too small! Your healthcare provider is there to support you throughout this process!
  • MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE: Keep in mind that every pregnancy journey is unique; focus on celebrating this special moment in your life rather than comparing yourself to others based on their experiences or perceived “perfect” pregnancies portrayed in media or social circles (which often do not reflect reality). Embrace your own journey as it unfolds!
  • CONNECTING WITH OTHER EXPECTANT PARENTS: Join local support groups or online communities where you can connect with other expectant parents who are going through similar experiences as you are – sharing stories, advice, tips, and encouragement can be incredibly helpful in managing emotions throughout pregnancy!
  • PRACTICING RELAXATION TECHNIQUES: Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation practices (such as mindfulness meditation), yoga poses designed for pregnant women (like child’s pose), or listening to calming music beforehand to help reduce stress levels leading up to and during your ultrasound appointment if needed (though most scans are relatively quick procedures). These practices can also benefit you throughout pregnancy by promoting overall well-being!
  • REFLECTING ON GRATITUDE: Take some time beforehand to reflect on all that has brought you to this point – whether it be years of trying for a family, recent life changes leading up to this momentous occasion, or simply being grateful for having reached this stage in your life – focusing on gratitude can help put things into perspective when facing any challenges along the way! 8.Celebrating
  • MILESTONES: Finally, celebrate each milestone reached throughout pregnancy – whether it be reaching certain gestational ages marked by specific ultrasounds (like viability scans), experiencing various physical changes associated with pregnancy progression (like feeling movement from within), receiving positive test results (such as negative genetic testing results), attending prenatal classes/workshops/support groups/community events designed specifically for expectant parents – these moments serve as reminders of just how far you’ve come thus far while providing encouragement for continuing forward on this incredible journey towards welcoming a new little one into your world!

A 2D is used to produce 2 dimensional images of what is happening inside the mothers and baby’s body. 4D scan is a moving 3D image. Still images provided are 3D. HD again is a moving 3D image and is version of 4D to provide clearer images.

We provide baby scans if you are aged over 18. Your date of birth will be requested on the client consent form and we may ask for proof of age if required. We can also have the discretion to ask for proof of age if we believe there is a chance that you may be under 18. Baby Scan and Beyond cannot provide scans to under 18’s.

Image quality may be affected by certain factors:

  • If you have a high Body Mass Index and more body tissue.
  • The position that baby is in at the time of the scan.
  • Baby’s face may be touching the placenta.

Some chocolate, a fizzy drink and a quick walk around Wigan City Centre has been known to move even the most stubborn of babies.

There are 2 scenarios here:

  • Yes if you are having an Early Reassurance Scan + you are under 15 weeks pregnant.
  • No if you are having a Gender Scan or a 4D scan.

The answer is yes. We suggest a little bit earlier for twins due to the fact there is less room in there to move. If you would like a 3D/4D scan, the best time to have twins or triplet gender scans would be from 16 weeks.

You do not need to bring anything with you, but please wear loose fitting clothes and bring any hospital / midwife contact details with you incase we need to contact them whilst you are at your appointment.

From 16 weeks a 4D scan can be done at any time during your pregnancy. Optimum results can be achieved between 27 and 32 weeks but you will still see excellent results outside of 27 to 32 weeks.

Please let us know in advance how many you would like to bring with you. Family, friends and children are all welcome to attend with you.

There have been Covid-19 limitations during the Pandemic so we comply with all official announcements. Please ask us about this if you need clarity.

No you cannot. Please go ahead as normal with your normal antenatal care and you should keep your midwife updated at all times so you don’t miss any guidance or tests scheduled by your midwife. If in doubt please consult with your midwife.
